47 years ago, south Lebanon stood at the brink of crisis, and the international community stepped forward to act.   “On March 19th, 1978, the United Nations Security Council passed resolutions 425 and 426, establishing UNIFIL to help restore peace and stability in southern Lebanon.”

.UNIFIL peacekeepers, from 48 countries, work together on the ground, at sea, and in the air to support peace.   “We have forged strong ties with local communities and worked closely with the الجيش اللبناني, helping them enhance security and stability.”

Since October 2023, the situation has become complex. “Our mission remains unchanged to support stability & implement Res 1701. Before hostilities, the region had been stable for 18 years, but the escalation of September last year has left villages in ruins and people displaced.”

“We are entering a new chapter, working alongside the @Lebarmy_Official to clear roads, make repairs, and remove explosives.”   UNIFIL remains committed to supporting local communities through impactful activities within its means and capabilities.

“Successfully implementing resolution 1701 can only be achieved through our joint efforts, with UNIFIL and الجيش اللبناني working hand in hand to prevent escalations, maintain stability, and reinforce state authority in southern Lebanon.”

“UNIFIL's ability to support الجيش اللبناني effectively will depend on the backing of the Lebanese Government and local authorities, whose cooperation is essential to ensure the mission can operate safely and efficiently in carrying out its mandate.”

“A return to stability will create conditions for addressing obstacles to peace. Through tripartite meetings, potentially with external partners, we can support to resolve blue line terrain disputes and advance towards lasting security.”

Today, UNIFIL Head Aroldo Lázaro hosted an Iftar with local leaders from south Lebanon. Our mission, built on dialogue and cooperation, focuses on supporting الجيش اللبناني in restoring stability & security in the south. Working together is key, especially in difficult times.

UNIFIL Head Aroldo Lázaro met today with President Joseph Aoun Lebanese Presidency in Beirut. They discussed the situation in south Lebanon and how the mission is realigning its efforts to current challenges and opportunities, to support the parties in implementing Resolution 1701.
