Sorry to hear this news...at JPE-Micro if the Editor takes longer than 45 days to make a decision they are fined $500. Yes, $500. I just paid the first fine, but over 100 submissions in total so far and only one fine paid! I like this clawback system and so do the authors!

"We have received 312 submissions in the 10 months between mid-February, when the journal began accepting submissions, and the end of 2022. The average time to first decision is less than 30 days (28.6 days), and more than two-thirds of submissions were sent out for review."

Hi #Econtwitter, I'd like to share the slides from the PhD Applied Econometrics course I just had the privilege to teach at Berkeley Agricultural and Resource Economics Regression & causality, selection on observables, panel data, IV, RDD --- usual topics but hopefully in a modern way github.com/borusyak/are213

For decades, this curve summed up the mainstream understanding of inequality within a country. However, recently, this curve has been the source of a fierce debate. Here's the breakdown:

Since this is doing the rounds: this was not a Stata error. This was an econometrics error. You can’t include time FE in an event study. Should Stata run an error message whenever a reg has two colinear vars? Tbh I don’t want it to have that feature.

Thinking carefully about variables and variation doesn’t just apply to FEs. Consider the following: y = a + b*hhsize + c*adults hhsize is household size and adults is adults in the household. What is the interpretation of b? What about c? Real example from a paper I reviewed.

Nightlights struggle to capture GDP in agricultural areas. Luckily, we now have better pixel-level proxies for agricultural GDP. Here's the breakdown (in simple terms):

Done another semester teaching causal inference🙂. Updated my course slides, added survival data, labs, corrected more typos this time. Close to 800 pages now. Always more to update next year. www2.stat.duke.edu/~fl35/CausalIn…

Let’s talk about the worst publishing experience. I will go first: I had a paper a Econometric Theory that was conditionally accepted after 3 rounds of review. Something bizarre happened, Editor sent it back to referees. We addressed the points, but it didn't matter: rejected!
