I just learned that Billy Bean is now gone on the same day we buried my father. I always loved working with Billy because, former big leaguer that he was, he was committed to finding positive outcomes, ways to win, big or small, for all #LGBTQ athletes. We should all miss him.

At a time when acceptance was hard to find for LGBTQ+ students, Tim Walz knew the signal it would send for a football coach to get involved in the Gay Straight Alliance. So he signed on to be the group’s faculty advisor.

We are heartbroken by this news. Billy was truly a trailblazer for openly gay athletes. We remember him with deep love and gratitude 💜

Billy Bean broke down barriers as only the 2nd MLB player to come out as gay. He dedicated his life to making sport a safer place as the league’s 1st ambassador for inclusion & later the VP of diversity, equity & inclusion. Sport is about impact—Billy exemplified that. ❤️
