As the author of this PDF, it's been interesting seeing people guess at the rationale behind its design. However, the rationale had nothing to do with theory vs practice, and everything to do with pragmatically coping with an unaccommodated disability in academia. (1/16)

This is so amazing and will do a million times more for propagating kannada than those goons who go around breaking boards and bones.

We hope to see scholars identifying with a global south at our Special Interest Group meeting at #CSCW2024. We hope a collective discussion helps surface individual insights about our positionality, that reflects in our scholarship. Details: sites.google.com/umd.edu/positi…

Open-source is ubiquitous in software development, but how about designing physical products? Our #CSCW2024 talk explored open-source collaboration in a hardware context, finding unique challenges and best practices. If you’re interested in design collaboration, let’s chat!

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve finished my Ph.D. at Mila - Institut québécois d'IA. For the last 4.5 years, I have worked on creating new faithfulness-centric paradigms for NLP Interpretability. Read my vision for the future of interpretability in our newposition paper: arxiv.org/abs/2405.05386

At UIST 2022, I asked Ted Chiang for advice on how to finish my novel. He said something like: “What are you asking me for advice for? I’ve never finished a novel. Too hard. That’s why I write short stories.” 😂😭

much of interpretability are hci problems. a lot of it is to help humans understand what this black box algorithm is. at a meta level, mech interp researchers deal with hci problems every day. visualization, direct manipulation, mental model, etc. are all classic hci things!

I just watched my students present their "explorable explanations" for learning, so impressive! I’m truly inspired by the future of education and how AI can help teachers create interactive, culturally responsive learning experiences. Stanford Graduate School of Education #AIinEducation

One of my most meaningful papers began with a participant laughing at Alexa and saying, “It’s like a silly child.” That metaphor led to years of research, multiple rejections, and a long relationship with uncertainty. I wrote about that journey here: smitdesai.net/chailab/2025/4…

BREAKING NEWS! Most people aren’t prompting models with IMO problems :) They’re prompting with tasks that need more context, like “plz make talk slides.” In an ACL oral, I’ll cover challenges in human-LM grounding (in 60K+ real interactions) & introduce a benchmark: RIFTS. 🧵
