A couple years later they graduated & took a research assistant job where I work. One day we ran into each other at the water cooler (really) & they told me they didn't #MATCH for residency, again. I went to medical school abroad & remember worrying about not matching. 2/

I knew they had a family & there was a big difference in income between being a research assistant & physician. They'd done all the training, they even graduated from a highly competitive graduate school program = more degrees & skills than the average residency applicant. 3/

But, it'd been a couple years since they finished medical school, worked in a clinical setting, and going to school outside the US is a risk from a residency program perspective. So, I felt like the right thing to do was invite them over for dinner. 4/

We talked about how they could make their application better, and how it was worth trying again. I told them I'd write a letter. They started working at a free clinic to get clinical experience, and got new letters of recommendation, they networked a lot, and tried again. 5/

Last week I got a text with a picture of the intern class they matched into with a thank you ♥️♥️♥️ My contribution was so little, but maybe I was there to give hope when there was little. We're all busy, but now is a good time to reach out to that mentee who didn't match. 6/

I'm happy they're off to a better life. I work with so many talented physicians that didn't train in the US, but are a major asset to our community. For those reading this that didn't match, share your story with others and don't give up hope. We're rooting for you! 🤗🤗🤗
