TODAY Dec 14 is the birthday of Stephen Cook (1939). In 1971 he formalized the notions of polynomial-time reduction and NP-completeness, and proved that SAT is NP-complete (also proven independently by Leonid Levin). He also formulated the famous P vs. NP problem.
