1/ The nuclear threats Russia has made throughout the Ukraine conflict have been rightly and universally condemned, but some Western commentators and politicians argue Putin is bluffing. This is dangerously complacent. abcnews.go.com/International/…

Headlines like these underscore why we need to eliminate nuclear weapons. If this was an ICBM, it would be a dangerous provocation that risks nuclear escalation. Even if not, the mere headline itself can cause confusion and panic with catastrophic consequences.

The wonderful Shigeko Sasamori died this week in Los Angeles at the age of 92. She was 13 years old when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on her city, Hiroshima. She suffered such severe burns that her parents struggled to recognise her in the aftermath.

The #DoomsdayClock moves to 89 seconds to midnight. Humanity stands closer to catastrophe than at any moment in its history. Juan Manuel Santos explains how we got here and what we must do now. Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

The Doomsday Clock moving ahead to 89 seconds to midnight is a stark reminder that we must act NOW. As Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists put it: “Every second of delay in reversing course increases the probability of global disaster.” But there is reason for hope, like the #NuclearBan Treaty. 🧵
