End of an era. The New Tropic sent its final newsletter this week. I'll forever be grateful for how working there changed how I think about journalism & the sense of place & agency it can inspire.

I was one of the people laid off from LAist yesterday. I didn’t take the buyout bc I was excited about some of the things I had in the works. I’m sad I won’t get to finish them, but I’m really proud of the work I did there and grateful for my colleagues and all I learned.

so disappointed to see this news. Ariel is truly one of the best people I've had the privilege to work with and learn from in my career. anyone would be lucky to have her join their team!!

Ariel did so much to focus my stories through research-backed lenses called modes. LAist stories are stronger because of the work she did. The takeaway: please keep supporting public media ✊🏽🎙️

Any successes I've been a part of in the last 2.5 years were because of Ariel's leadership & creative thinking. I learned so much working with her and the organization has benefited so much. So devastated by this loss for us (and envious of whoever is able to work with her next)

limited run newsletters are a GREAT way to engage your audience and I think newsrooms should be doing more of them! They can be timely, which increases the likelihood of people subscribing and can also turn casual readers into loyalists (and even into donors/members!)

Laying people off is hard, but this attempt to be “cute” and “on brand” about people’s livelihoods shows a lack of emotional maturity and tact that should become an example for what not to do. The brand book can be abandoned for empathy.

We’ve focused so much on evaluation at the Guardian in our experiments, especially because of risk and subjectivity of output. Building frameworks that capture the right metrics & finding expert time to evaluate are real challenges
