At the Forever Green Field Day yesterday on the University of Minnesota campus. Forever green researchers, specialists, and commercialization team showcased multiple continuous living cover crops. This event was a gathering of Forever Green's many multi-sector partnerships!

At Ed McNamara’s field for a Planting Green field day today! Hosted by Ed, Goodhue SWCD, and UMN Extension. We talked ins and outs of planting a cash crop into a cover crop and heard from local producers willing to share their successes and opportunities for learning. #covercrops

Today I got to teach in-field soil health assessments- in the garden! We trained a group of Ramsey County master gardener volunteers on conducting in-field soil health assessments and how to interpret their findings, understanding soil tests, and making management recommendations

Down in Waseca last week- signs that much of the rain we got mid-May didn't go into the ground in the heavily tilled system.

Today the UMN Agroecology group got to talk about participatory breeding trials at Kurt Kimbers farm, as well as do a field visit to the St. Paul breeding plots, which showcase different kernza and perennial rye varieties. Opportunities for collaborative science with farmers!

Today I terminated the cover crops (annual ryegrass, red clover) in our root boxes. The idea is to get a timelapse of the decomposition process. Hope to showcase the below ground magic of cover crops. This is the 1st trial of experiment! What’s missing is the full soil food web…
