Since the mid-1990s, Fusarium head blight has emerged as one of the most significant diseases affecting small grain production, with epidemics occurring at higher frequencies and over a larger area than in the past. Yield losses can exceed 50% if conditions favor disease;

Our exotic underwater Xylaria continues to grow in our lab aquarium and it has moved into new wood. This little known foreign fungus (now in aquariums in the US) has the unusual ability to grow underwater - more information see: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

#Corn growth may struggle when planted into green #covercrops. However, vegetation burndown can effectively counter such challenges, while optimizing early planting opportunities. The cover crop plot on the left was terminated 4 wks prior to planting. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext

After a few sunny days, #corn is wilting. If we check the #soil, it is clear moisture is not short. Accordingly, leaf wilt is a very unreliable indicator of #irrigation needs. More sunshine and aeration are the best cure for this matter. 🌽#mscorn #MSUext #plant25 #mscrops

Recent wind, hail & sandblasting accompanying rain damaged a lot of corn. Watch out for baterial diseases, such as Goss's wilt, bacterial leaf streak (BLS), & stinky bacterial stalk rot. Fungicides won't control bacterial - send samples UNLPlant&Pest Clinic for ID & FMI see comments

NEMATODE MONDAY: double trouble on yellow squash. Root knot nematode on roots, but also symptoms of an insect (aphid or whitefly) transmitted virus. Field symptoms make it appear to be virus induced, but RKN also involved. Lab tests will tell the true story #SON #Virus #ACES

Friendly reminder that urease inhibitors (NBPT products) aren’t needed on urea that’s dropped into the water. So on your spoon-feed in flood, midseason, or boot applications in rice, save your money and leave those products off. Plain urea is all you need.
