Breaking news! Thread 👇 Council are proposing radical changes to the Royal Charter and Statutes that govern BU. They would like to take all the powers of Court. Instead of Coucil being equal partners to Senate, under Court, Council want to become "the Supreme governing body".

The SU are unlikely to want to risk the salaries they are paid by BU leading a vote of no confidence. Perhaps you can ask the SU who are in BU council if they voted for the staff redundancies or not.

A reminder that “Governance” change is going on. The “Employment Statute” is being removed from our venerable Charter. Court voted to be demoted to a promotional and PR body. Important Ordinances are being changed, and the standard contract for BU employees is being changed.

When the new charter is in place, and the current employment statute is removed, the Executive will be able to make staff redundant a LOT more easily.

Asking for a friend: We have read the MoU between Unite the union: join a union UNISON - UK's largest union @UCU and Bangor University, and the response to the business cases, but can’t answer them on how this current round of redundancies is any different to the last two? Bangor UCU 👇

BangorUniversityStaff (@bangor_staff) 's Twitter Profile Photo

It seems as though the MoU between management and the unions may have been breached. There is no sign of the promised financial update from management. At risk staff who didn’t want to take voluntary redundancy don’t know what to expect now.

This round of redundancies is not different. After 9 months of pressure and uncertainty & hardly a peep from the Unions since December, very few (~20 out of the 200) staff remain at risk. Most have given in & taken voluntary redundancy, early retirement, or contract reductions.

It has been a long and difficult process of negotiation between management and the three campus trade unions, but it is finally at an end. Thank you to all of our members for their support and patience over the past nine months.

Its nomination time for Bangor UCU. NB trade unions actually represent ALL staff in negotiations, not just members. In this years elections Bangor Uni staff might reflect on the 200 staff cuts (via redundancies/departures) the unions agreed last year & the increase in workload.
