Great piece in the The Irish Times this weekend by Patrick Honohan, especially the paragraphs below on why public infrastructure and services have lagged behind population growth & headline economic success.

As Jennifer O'Connell writes in the The Irish Times this weekend, Community Foundation Ireland Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) research has shown a means-tested 2nd tier of child benefit could lift 40k children out of poverty. Idea was mentioned in the Fine Gael manifesto so could yet make the programme for government.

It’s astonishing how hard the The Irish Times are shilling on behalf of senior public servants’ pensions. Piece below repeats the spin of beneficiaries without any scrutiny. Their tax bill on retirement would be substantially higher if promoted because their pension would be too!

It’s been 6+ years since the initial Dublin BusConnects network redesign was proposed and these corridors are still crawling through the planning system. A perfect illustration of how process and procedure is stalling progress delivering the infrastructure we so badly need.

1/5 Today’s fiscal monitor show the final Exchequer returns for 2024. There are two key takeaways from the figures: 1) underlying revenue remains very strong; 2) spending is increasing at a rapid pace leading to large overruns.

A bit of truth telling in Cliff Taylor piece today on planning dysfunction in caption below. 2/3 of households are owners. Dysfunction in delivering housing & infrastructure has helped Irish net household wealth to €1.1 trillion (!) up from €700bn at the height of the boom.

Congestion pricing coverage is peak economics Every person is like, "I didn't used to bear the external costs of my behavior. But now that I do, I am adjusting along an infinite variety of least-cost adaptive margins that no central planner could have foreseen or designed"

Deeply disappointed that the Programme for Government makes no commitment whatsoever to implement or even examine the Housing Commission Report. The Programme is largely just a restatement of existing commitments made in Housing for All. As the Housing Commission report 1/4
