The poorest households in Slovenia & Malta are better off than the poorest in the UK. UK has some of the least generous welfare across the OECD Yet govts push failed policies, real wage/benefit cuts, unchecked profiteering, oppose higher tax on the rich. niesr.ac.uk/wp-content/upl…

We got answers from the DWP they didn’t want to give. Universal Credit reviews linked to deaths nearly doubled — and the data only came after MPs voted for benefit cuts. We’re holding power to account. 💳 Support: link in comments. #DWP #UniversalCredit #VoxPolitical

This is what budgeting looks like without enough to live on. A UBI gives people space to breathe — to plan, budget, and spend on essentials like food, rent, clothes, and travel to work. It's not luxury. It's dignity. #BasicIncome

🧵How could the UK pay for a Universal Basic Income? Short answer: We already spend most of what’s needed. The rest can come from fairer taxation on wealth and high incomes. Here’s the breakdown 👇

🧵 You’re not wrong — and the worst part? The government doesn’t need to underfund pensions or benefits. The UK issues its own currency. It can afford dignity. What it lacks is political will. #UBI

The average EU govt spending on social welfare is 19.2% of GDP, ranging from 8.1% to 25.7%. The UK spends 10.6% yet govts constantly cut benefits and right wing media says welfare is unaffordable. Taxing the UK rich is off the political agenda. ec.europa.eu/eurostat/stati…

I read recently that UBS is good because it won't make people lazy and uses taxes, and UBI is bad because it will make people lazy and won't use taxes, and I just had to point out how absurd that argument is in this episode. Also, I think we should tax wealth and do UBI + UBS.
