10 June 1138. Battle of Clitheroe. A Scottish army under magnate William fitz Duncan routed a heavily armoured English force near the river Ribble, in Lancashire. The victorious Scots marched to join their main army under king David I near Northallerton.

On this day 1644. The parliamentarian forces besieging #York prepare to spring 3 mines and storm the city. Major-General Lawrence Crawford detonates one mine too early, making a breach at St. Mary's tower. The attack is beaten off by the Marquis of Newcastle's royalist defenders.

30th June 1643. Battle of Adwalton Moor secures Royalist control of Yorkshire (excluding Hull), and most of the north of England. Following this defeat, Parliament take the decision to seek assistance from the Scots.

2 July 1644. The Battle of Marston Moor, York. A combined Scottish & English army numbering 27,000 defeat Prince Rupert's 18,000 royalists. The royalist 'whitecoats' fought on to the death & were 'killed in rank and file’. The battle led to the king's loss of the north.
