#OnThisDay in 1547 Henry VIII died, aged 55. Not long beforehand he had he entrusted Bethlem Royal Hospital to the City of London. A portrait of Henry was hanging first in the Boardroom of the Hospital at Moorfields & subsequently at St. George’s Fields & now at Monks Orchard.

After setting fire to York Minster #OnThisDay in 1829, Jonathan Martin was confined in the Criminal Lunatic Department at Bethlem from 1829-1838. There he produced remarkable artworks typically depicting his prophetic visions. bit.ly/2MyPCRO Image: "Hell's Gate"

At Bethlem Museum of the Mind you can see the paintings of Charlotte Johnson Wahl. She was hospitalised for 8 months with #OCD in the 70s, but as Rachel Johnson told us, painting was her oxygen, helping her through treatment. welldoing.org/article/how-ra…
