The highest-level “red flag warning” has just been issued *again* for parts of LA and Ventura counties, this time for Tues-Wed. No rest for the exhausted :-(

Both San Diego and downtown Los Angeles have gotten just 0.16" of rainfall since July 1. That's the lowest in 175 years of San Diego data + tied for the lowest in 148 years of L.A. data. No rain whatesoever for the foreseeable future, & we're now at the height of the wet season.

Not only could these be historic snow amounts in southern LA, but they'll be preceded by several days of cold, so the snow may stick & pile up more than usual. (A snowfall of 6" as measured on a snowboard can easily amount to no more than 1-2" of accumulation on warm ground.)

Not surprised a rolling 10-yr avg doesn't show a trend. Even *annual* rain/snow hasn't changed dramatically for LA & CA. What *has* changed? It's hotter during droughts now, and there are bigger wet-to-dry and dry-to-wet swings. Both are clim-chg-related. e360.yale.edu/features/danie…

Simply put, we've never seen this fire-friendly a backdrop in late January in modern California history. And now we have yet more strong offshore winds in the forecast, including another potentially intense round early next week. Vigiliance will be crucial.

By New Orleans' standards, an extreme event is in the forecast. From what I can find, the max 3-day snowfall on available record on ACIS is 2.7". Looking through historical records, there was an 8" event in 1895. No matter how you slice it, an official forecast of 3-6" is

It's all hands on deck for the historic snowstorm set to bring the Deep South their biggest snow in a generation The Hurricane Hunters (Hurricane Hunters) are even flying out in the Gulf collecting data to feed into this evening's model runs to try and lock down the forecast even more

We have a once-in-a-generation Gulf Coast snowstorm, despite the lack of a truly record-shattering cold air mass. What's up? Jeff Masters and I dig in. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/a-high…

It's tough to make a true meteorological sense of something that occurred 130 years ago, but as the person who has looked at the Valentine's Day 1895 storm, the previous Gulf Coast benchmark storm more than almost anyone (spacecityweather.com/houston-snow-1…), I'll share a few opinions. 1/7

#Florida had a bigger single day snowfall than nearly every major Canadian city - even the north. This could be the most wild map I've made in my career #Enzo #Winterstorm #Toronto

It's the unusual snow cover, overtopped by a cold/very dry air mass, that allowed temps to plunge into the single digits all the way to southern LA this morning. All-time record low of 4F in Lafayette (data back to 1893) and coldest in more than a century in several other spots.

The World Weather Attribution group studied the devastating L.A. wildfires, concluding that human-caused climate change led to a 35% increase in their probability. Climate change could not be blamed for the Santa Ana winds, though. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/climat…

Excellent thread on the current event and on why what's been happening solar-storm-wise in 2024-25 isn't that unusual historically (and why it may seem like it is).
