GenXers have about $1 trillion more retirement savings (DB pensions + ret accounts) than Boomers did at the same age, according to the Fed's Distributional Financial Accounts. But let's panic anyway. usatoday.com/story/money/20…

Andrew G. Biggs: “U.S. policymakers focus almost exclusively on Social Security solvency; picking from a menu of tax increases or benefit reductions to keep the trust funds from running out, with little regard for what the Social Security program intends to do.

If AARP is so worried about the 2/3 of seniors who they say rely on Social Security, why are they criticizing policies that only affect the 1/4 who they say don't rely on it? I have two theories....

Apparently people are mad because she said she would be looking for work at a think tank that is “center-left or center-right” but there is nothing strange about that lol! People move between companies that are “center-left and center-right” constantly. The keyword is “center”

"Every signal is flashing red. Three of the main federal trust funds are close to insolvent....When the funds are depleted, the rules require the government to cut highway spending by 46%, Social Security retirement payments by 24% and Medicare payments by 12%"

I’ve noticed a sudden explosion in conservative influencers who lack a basic understanding of Social Security finances, demographics, etc. parroting this line this weekend. Clearly someone is funding the effort and providing the message.

Since 1983 the relative wealth of seniors has increased by around 50%. You would never guess this from news coverage of Americans' retirement savings. nber.org/digest?page=1&…

If only they were right: If Social Security paid every senior a poverty-level benefit, eliminant old-age poverty, costs would being cut in half. It's $60k annually to middle-income couples (3x poverty), and $100k to high-income couples that cause the $25 trillion funding gap.
