1.74M families now receive Aswesuma, - about 1/3 of 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka. Govt plans to further expand it. But where is the urgency to cut it from those who no longer need it? Nothing kills a society faster than turning work into a burden & welfare in to a carrier. #EndlessWelfare

Females in #LKA can work night shifts only in a few occupations. But that’s changing — regulations under the 1954 Shop & Office Act will soon be revised to allow waitresses to work night shifts. 🍽️ #SriLanka #LabourReform #GenderEquality economynext.com/sri-lanka-to-c…

#Irregularmigration isn't always about sneaking across borders — it can begin with a legal entry. Visa overstays or breaching visa conditions are common pathways into irregularity, increasingly seen in #LKA. #regularmigration #LKA dailymirror.lk/breaking-news/…

The August deadline is approaching for "reciprocal tariffs": what will be the effect of US tariffs on Sri Lanka? We used GTAP to simulate two shock scenarios: 1) 10% and sectoral tariffs (this is where we are now) 2) Post-August world with given tariffs and deals (1/n).

The tariffs reduce the US apparel imports by 8.8% with large negative impact on CHN. The diverted trade goes to countries like Sri Lanka, increasing Sri Lanka's apparel exports by 17.4%. This is a result of relative price advantage due to high tariffs on CHN (3/n).
