We recently cared for a very special patient: a Huahou (red knot) suffering from botulism. After a few weeks in care, and a lot of tasty mealworms, this bird made a full recovery and was released at Kidd’s Beach.

In early December, we received three tiny pink hatchlings. These sacred kingfisher chicks weighed only 7 and 8 grams! Sadly, their nest was destroyed by an environmental and engineering consulting company just as their eggs were hatching. Full post: facebook.com/share/p/hoJdK8…

This tarāpunga (red billed gull) was absolutely thrilled to return home! This gull was found weak and struggling in the current. After some TLC at BirdCare Aotearoa, they regained their strength and were ready to return to the wild. This was such a heartwarming release 💚

Another incredible transformation! Can you guess what species of bird this is? This moho pererū (banded rail) arrived in our care weak and afraid. After a couple of months in care, this special patient has now been released to an existing population in Shakespear Regional Park.

With the recent stormy weather we have had a sudden influx of unwell young kererū! We’ve reopened our second nursery as a ‘kererū ward’ to care for these young ones. Help us to get these beautiful manu back on their wings 💚 birdcareaotearoa.org.nz/urgentappeal/

Patient update: the blended family of moho pererū (banded rail) have been successfully released at Shakespear Regional Park. They will join an existing population of rail in a safe, predator controlled area.
