Just got accepted!🎉While #ruff sandpiper #morphs differ slightly in sperm speed and morphology, no distinct polymorphism emerged. Stay tuned for the full paper on insights into alternative mating tactics! 🔬 frontiersin.org/journals/ecolo… #Ecology #Evolution #Ornithology FŽP ČZU v Praze

AVOTREX is out: an open-access companion to AVONET containing morphological traits for ~600 extinct bird species and a phylogeny grafting these taxa onto the global bird tree to support future research on Anthropogenic extinctions. Hat-tip to many co-authors; led by Ferran Sayol

Providing food at birdfeeders can be crucial for the survival of local birds, especially in winter. However, it’s important to remember that birdfeeders, even without food, attract more small birds - and in turn, attract more predators like sparrowhawks and cats. Our new study👇

Excited to share kenyabirdtrends.co.ke & associated paper doi.org/10.1111/ddi.13…! We used KenyaBirdMap & eBird data to assess the change in distribution range of 1 088 bird species. We found a range reduction among scavengers & migrants, while introduced birds expanded.

🐦 Aberrant syntax in #cuckoo calls disrupts conspecific communication, yet hosts still respond to high-rate aberrant calls, potentially increasing detection costs for callers compensating their aberrant vocal phenotype 🔗Our recent story: doi.org/10.1016/j.anbe…

Our new study is out! 🏙️🦟Do invertebrates, like vertebrates, increase their tolerance to humans in cities? We found that dragonflies & damselflies don’t respond to urbanization itself, but rather to the level of human activity at the site. 👉doi.org/10.1111/een.13…

Food availability influences bird migratory routes, but little is known about co-migration between insectivorous birds and their insect prey. We found a strong temporal overlap between number of migrating hoverflies and insectivorous birds in Czechia. 👉doi.org/10.1098/rsos.2…

Our new study: We show that both habitat composition and weather interact to shape breeding success of a declining #farmland 🦃, the grey partridge (Perdix perdix), in Central Europe. Highlights the need for habitat conservation under climate change. 👉 doi.org/10.1007/s10980…

I love to do a simple natural history observations on birds. Recently, I witnessed a Eurasian #Magpie that pulled a Common #Swift out of its nesting hole in central Prague (new predation method) - then catch it mid-air several times before killing it 🪶 researchgate.net/publication/39…

Roe deer embryos track the green wave 🌿🦌! Our new study shows the end of diapause isn’t fixed (and photoperiod-dependent, as assumed for a long time): longer growing seasons lead to earlier end of diapause, aligning births with plant phenology. 👉doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2…
