The energy-intensive sector in Britain has a turnover of £170 billion, a GVA of nearly £40 billion, and employs over 400,000 people. Energy costs are crippling it. The government is only going to be more hamstrung by this. telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/05/2…

Which countries really rely on foreign tourists for money? Spain, Turkey, and small Med states. But notably *not* Italy or Japan: the UK, Netherlands, and France are all more dependent on international tourism as a percentage of GDP than Italy is—and the U.S. more than Japan!

Not surprised at all. Italy still actually makes a lot of stuff; northern Italy has some serious manufacturing hubs that rival Germany.

hot take if tourism is 3%> of a country's GDP, it's selling its soul. i noticed this living in spain. the qualitatively nicest areas of barcelona, by architecture, layout, and location, have been hollowed out into an amusement park. without the crowds it would be unparalleled

Even among European luxury goods companies, Hermès is unique for its narrower focus on leather goods and the very high prices its most signature items command. Hermès women's handbags sell for tens of thousands of dollars and even celebrities cannot buy them straightforwardly.
