The thing about Norman Tebbit, who has died at 94, is people could disagree passionately with him on fundamental issues but there was basic civility in the debate. This has largely disappeared from modern politics, a problem made 1,000 times worse by social media. End of an era.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. The extreme left people on here are every bit as crazy, unpleasant and dim as the extreme right. There is not even a wafer thin piece of tissue paper between them. Extremism is extremism and is deeply ugly in all its incarcerations.

The news from Texas worsens by the hour. The most unbearable loss for those poor families. Like gun control after a shooting, it’s never a good time. But at some point we will need to discuss climate denial and also this. It cannot continue, as these events will only intensify.
