HUBERT LAWS: Today we celebrate Hubert Laws, undoubtedly one of the greats. Flute, though beautiful, is not usually an instrument you hear in jazz. But Hubert’s voice still came through so strongly. The instrument didn’t matter; it was about his ideas. Happy Birthday, Mr. Laws!

IDRIS MUHAMMAD: Today is the birthday of a great jazz drummer, Idris Muhammad. Idris was the drummer on the first jazz album I really fell in love with: Black Talk by Charles Earland. Later, I had the pleasure of recording w/Idris myself, on my album Modern Man. Happy Birthday!

JIM HALL: Today we celebrate the birthday of Jim Hall. Years ago, I heard that Jim had participated in a DownBeat Blindfold Test in which one of my recordings was played for him. Jim chuckled and said, “So that’s why Sonny never calls me anymore!” Quite a compliment. HBD Jim!
