Just about to start our roundtable on Screening Violence ⁦BISA - British International Studies Association⁩ conference 2022. The empty chair is for my colleague Diah Kusumaningrum whose efforts to get a visa over the last 6 weeks from ⁦Home Office⁩ failed preventing her joining in person.

Gorgeous summer weather in Newcastle and while I am in the office, it’s good to see some members of the family have managed to down tools and enjoy the sun!

I find it hard to believe, but 20 years ago today, I joined Newcastle Politics. It’s been a privilege to work with so many talented & wonderful people. It truly has been a place to grow & prosper & I am thankful for the mentoring, advice, & support offered by colleagues on the journey.

Odd that the Tories are using a bastardised form of STV to decide their next leader and PM when a decade ago they ran a campaign warning of the dangers of STV to British democracy

That this was entirely predictable makes it no less worrying. Peaceful protest against an institution shrouded in secrecy and publicly funded no longer permissible. The rage of the Met officer is barely contained.

Police arrest peaceful anti-monarchy protesters & have erected giant barriers to osbcure pro-republic banners. Right to freely protest suppressed. Shame!

I was at the No event. We were crammed into a media room away from what was obviously a party. The narrative was that there wasn’t anything other than canapés. But Australia’s richest woman Gina Rinehart was there - i asked many times who was there but they would not share.
