Jay Robin’s #Rose Garden is in full bloom, a symphony of colour and scent with over 750 David Austin Roses in more than 100 varieties. It is a spectacular display of form, fragrance and summer romance, framed by topiary and softened by lavender.

Set against the historic southern wall of the Garden, Paradise Walk stirs to life with herbaceous borders in hues of blue, lilac, cream and yellow.⁠ Beyond the blooms, sweeping views stretch across the heritage-listed South Park inviting you to pause and soak in the season.

The Mid Summer Border is beginning to stir, its fiery palette slowly awakening beneath the early summer sun. Among its rising stars are the Gold Standard Roses, chosen for their resilience and richly coloured blooms in shades of amber, yellow, deep crimson and coral.⁠⁠

As spring draws to a close, the #Rose Garden glows beneath the soft gold of lengthening days.⁠ ⁠ Here, roses bask quietly in the light, their petals opening slowly to the warmth. Each bloom carries its own story of colour and perfume, weaving through the air.⁠

Tucked within the shelter of the Round Dell, Magnolia macrophylla, the bigleaf magnolia, continues its magnificent display. This rare species boasts the largest simple leaves of any temperate North American tree alongside fragrant, creamy-white flowers.

Astrantias drift quietly through the borders, their pin-cushion blooms rising on slender stems above a collar of bracts. Thriving in dappled light and cooler corners, these perennials bring texture and elegance to borders, weaving effortlessly among ferns, grasses and roses.

The Italian Garden is alight with the fiery hues of Lilium martagon, their slender stems crowned with blooms that twist and curl like flames.⁠ Graceful yet bold, they thrive in dappled shade, offering a moment of intensity within this serene, symmetrical space.⁠

The Round Dell is a hidden world of layered green, where foliage spills and soars in every direction.⁠ In this sheltered, sunken space, sub-tropical plants from East Asia reach their peak and shade shifts with the day, a cooling respite where every path feels like a discovery.⁠

Lavender hums with summer. Bees drift from bloom to bloom, drawn to the haze of lilac that borders paths or spills over stone - bringing structure and softness in equal measure. Plant it in full sun and free-draining soil, where it will thrive and return, year after year.⁠ ⁠

This summer, we are proud to continue our tradition of inspiring creativity with a new exhibition of paintings in our Victorian Glasshouse.⁠ Created by local Sussex artists, each work captures the beauty of nature and the countryside, and the quiet emotions they stir within us.

July in the Garden hums with energy, where colour deepens and each day feels steeped in warmth. Feed, water and deadhead summer bedding to keep the rhythm going. Cut back early perennials to invite a second flush, and sow biennials now for next year’s grace.

Campanula brings charm to the summer garden with starry blooms of violet, blue and soft white. ⁠Its name comes from the Latin ‘campana’, meaning 'little bell', a fitting echo of its shape.⁠ Thriving in sun or partial shade, it weaves itself naturally into the landscape.⁠

Paradise Walk lives up to its name in July. Redesigned in 2020 by RHS award-winning designer Chris Beardshaw, the borders are planted with over seventy perennials. This is a place where pale yellows, dusky blues and soft creams weave softly along the southern wall of the Garden.

Along Paradise Walk, Kniphofia ‘Tawny King’ bring a quiet fire to the borders. Their tapering blooms rise like torches in apricot and copper tones, glowing against the historic stone walls.⁠ Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, they offer both resilience and beauty.⁠

Thriving in sun and well-drained soil, Catalpa × erubescens ‘Purpurea’ brings a subtle boldness. Its large, heart-shaped leaves emerge in deep, velvety purple gradually softening to a deep green and in summer, delicate white flowers with speckled throats appear in airy clusters.

The Mid Summer Border burns bright in July, its fiery palette alive with energy beneath the high summer sun. Crocosmia sparks through the planting with flickers of flame, while Hemerocallis brings depth and movement, all echoed by the airy forms of Calamagrostis and Miscanthus.
