I think people have underestimated how beloved and valued safe space on Stanley Park Drive has become to Vancouver residents who love biking, how this decision feels after three years of filling in survey after survey, writing emails, speaking at Park Board Meetings etc +

Two general vehicle lanes allows higher vehicle speeds and no separated bike lane means no protection from irresponsible drivers like this. Which means that fewer people are going to take the risk of cycling on the road and the ones that continue will be in much greater danger.

Martyn Schmoll City of Vancouver Exactly. What an achievement under intense public scrutiny and immense political pressure, incredibly tight timeframes and attempting to accommodate the interests of different stakeholders while prioritising safety of vulnerable road users.

Marie-Claire Howard 🇺🇦🇮🇱 Commissioner Howard access to Stanley Park was only restricted for 2 months at the beginning of Covid after which 1 lane has been available to drivers the whole way around Stanley Park Drive. Car parks to every major destination are open & available to visitors arriving by car.

Marie-Claire Howard 🇺🇦🇮🇱 With respect, Stanley Park is inaccessible to a lot of people and removing the separated bike lane is going to make it less accessible. It certainly won’t solve other complex accessibility issues in the park, such as the lack of curb cuts and ramps and the sea wall gates.

Like many of you, I am livid about this short-sighted, costly, car-centric decision, that seems to benefit *ppl who want to drive faster around a park* at the expense of pedestrians, ppl riding bikes, and safety for all. Spin it all you want, this is All ‘Bout Cars. #VanPoli

Some thoughts on last night's 6-1 decision on the #StanleyPark bike path by the Park Board: globalnews.ca/video/9485418/…

Remember: this is the route opponents of the #StanleyPark bike lane kept insisting was the place people should be riding if they wanted to take bikes into the park. It’s closed for weeks or months every year for repairs or other maintenance. They don’t actually care about access.

I keep hearing we don't need an active transport lane on Broadway because 8th & 10th exist. Here's a map of crashes involving cyclists over 5 years. The corridor between 4th–16th has 1/3 of all crashes (950/2744). The black box is 10th Ave. Remind me where the safe routes are?
