“The first draft is just you telling yourself the story” - Terry Pratchett said this and it’s probably the most transformative bit of wisdom in terms of how I’ve come to approach my work (it applies to poetry as well, I think).

I love this line from George Saunders' most recent newsletter: "Maybe, being an artist isn’t about transforming ourselves into some totally new and foreign being, but finding out what sort of being we are, and being more of that."
