Of children aged under one year who died in Ireland in 1931, ninety two percent were in institutions across the country. There were 13 born in Galway that year three died outside the institutions. In Offaly all ten died within institutions. - source DLGPH Report 1932

On 2nd September 1954 fourteen boys were released from #Letterfrack #IndustrialSchool on “supervision certificate” I’ve never met a child who was released early on such certificate and wonder what it meant. Did authorities keep tabs on children as tho they were criminals? 💔

They left, thousands of unskilled young men by boat reaching #Liverpool and travelling to cities for work and a place to sleep. The pub became a place all too familiar where they left their cheques drinking to dull the pain of forced emigration. Many never returned. #OurPeople
