The American team has almost no experience in high-level international negotiation, no regional expertise on Ukraine and Russia, and no relevant foreign language knowledge. Not true of the Russians, to put it mildly.  Looks like a bloodbath by design.

It's odd that a WaPo political columnist started writing about farming. I'm into the topic, and have read the books he seems to be summarizing (Pollan, Kingsolver, Rebanks, Kimball...). Maybe it's just a middle-age thing. Or maybe he's smartly preparing for the After Times.

ICYMI, it officially happened. The Sinaloa Cartel is now on the US Foreign Terrorist Organization list, alongside al Qaida and ISIL. 7 other criminal groups are there, too. These lists are often politicized, with the term “terrorist” stretched more and more. But wow.

I’m not sure the US will attack in Mexico, but if it does, cartels could retaliate inside the US. Or even more easily, cartels could attack some of the 1.5 million US citizens living in Mexico, or the many thousands concentrated at Mexican beaches. Of course I hope not.

I completely missed that Republicans introduced a bill to increase the endowment tax from 1.4% to 21%. If passed, Harvard would go from paying ~$35m to $525m/yr in federal taxes (that’s 8.2% of its current operating expenses)

Fascinating. Stephen Miller is the moderate (!) in the White House, encouraging cooperation with Mexico vs cartels. Because cooperation could help with his real priority, stopping immigration. Gorka (of course) wants war. nytimes.com/2025/02/27/wor…

This is so recognisable for anyone who lived under Soviet-style communism that it is hilarious. I guess "westerners" get to experience it for the first time.
