Stockholm Stockholms stad is now at the top of my list of European cities I have visited. The historic old town on Gamla Stan and the surrounding areas on the the other islands is simply beautiful.

Great day at the head offices of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association with Sebastien Bystrom, Player Development Manager, and some of his colleagues. Talked player/coach development within an Ecological Dynamics framework. Some great collaborations to follow. Tre Kronor

Heather Mannix from USA Hockey presenting on practice design. What should a practice contain to develop skilled players. No mention of flow drills, isolated or unopposed drilling. Make use of the CLA and non-linear methods.

Don't just take our word for it. U Sports Champion Sean McGurn just recently committed to play hockey at Arizona State University. He has been skating with Zach for years. #hockey #development #skills #canada #ottawa #ncaahockey

Why can’t this fact get more traction? We continue to see skill development as an isolated, repetition activity. Skill is a game quality. Not an isolation quality.

1/3…Coaches…reading research on skill/athlete/talent development is not easy but can be very informative. It can provide evidence on what we perhaps should be doing, how and why. Hockey Eastern Ontario Hockey Canada

3/3…Lots of amazing and informative results shared that provide new and improved methods for development and raise questions on how we have traditionally approached development. Hockey Eastern Ontario Hockey Canada

Coaching is not about prescribing and dictating. It's about creating situations where the athlete is challenged to figure it out. You nudge them along, but if you always give them the answer, you aren't actually teaching. And they aren't learning.

Coaches, don't let your athletes drink any of this kind of stuff. This example has the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee and 63 grams of sugar, which is the same as 16 teaspoons. I saw a kid drink two of those in an hour last week.

Traditionally/conventionally, the game is taught broken down into individual actions trained in isolation - not connected with team intentions - then put back together at the team level. By taking a complex dynamic systems approach, we see the game holistically/interconnected

A little word smithing for a different audience. Players not scanning the ice? Make practice demand it, not just drills that say it.
