Born 15th November 1738, in Hanover, William Herschel was a talented musician, but became a remarkable observational astronomer. Discovering the planet Uranus in 1781 and aided by his sister Caroline the pair made numerous discoveries of the universe we live in.

OTD - 7th January 1790 Caroline Herschel discovered her third Comet now classified as Comet C/1790 A1 (Herschel). It boosted her reputation as a 'comet hunter' receiving recognition from both England and France - her next comet discovery was just three months later!

Commemorating OTD 9th January 1848 the death of Caroline Herschel. A pioneering comet hunter she was awarded the Royal Astronomical Society’s gold medal in 1828 and accepted as a member of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1835. An inspirational figure in science and astronomy.

Happy Birthday Caroline Herschel, born this day 16th March 1750 in Hanover (Germany). An aspiring singer she became an exceptional observer of the night sky discovering 7 comets and receiving a salary from the King. Find out more by visiting the Herschel Museum of Astronomy.
