An autistic woman with a learning disability was wrongly locked up in a mental health hospital for 45 years, starting when she was just seven years old - and held in solitary confinement for 25 years. Still the barbarism goes on despite so many promises bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Dr Staite said that staff had described Kasibba (in her 50s) as "dangerous" and an "eye-gouger". This was traced back to an incident when she was 19 years old.

This is so terribly upsetting & that it is still happening. It’s an excellent & moving report that is completely gut wrenching. . Sammy’s future was this but he died by state neglect before. 😭 Thanku Carolyn Atkinson & Ben Robinson for telling this story 😔

Huge thanks to Alexis for her powerful testimony in discussion with Nuala McGovern on BBC Woman's Hour about how to improve the system, after Kasibba’s story of being ‘Locked Up’ for 45 years, in segregation for 25, was told by BBC File On 4 prod by Ben Robinson edited by Carl Johnston

I've just listened to this BBC File On 4 programme for my weekly Church Times radio review: it's both a genuinely disturbing listen & first-rate public interest journalism. More than 200 minors are sectioned; some probably necessarily, but the system's failures are horrifying.

You might remember our special edition of Woman’s Hour where we asked if the SEND system is working. 17-year-old Katie was part of the panel & she's just given evidence to the Education Committee about her experiences of SEND provision. She joins @bbcnuala to tell us more ⬇️

The Government has announced plans for welfare benefit reform for England & Wales, saying they will save £5bn a year by 2030. ❓ But how will this affect unpaid carers who are predominantly women? Carers UK's Emily Holzhausen & Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson join @bbcnuala to discuss ⬇️

1/ Powerful segment on BBC Woman's Hour this morning. In May 2023, a young woman with anorexia was described in the Court of Protection as "untreatable" and in the "pre-death stage" of her illness.

Michelle Wright’s interview on BBC Woman's Hour (edited version below) about her recovery from anorexia just stops you in your tracks. I hope every MP voting on the assisted dying bill listens to Michelle & what she says about people like her being given a ‘terminal diagnosis’

‘If you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person. Everybody's different’ Sally Phillips spoke to Datshiane about working alongside Michael Theo in the new BBC comedy series Austin & why it's important to make sets accessible for neurodiverse actors 📺 ⬇️

❓What’s it like to be a woman in prison? In a special episode of Woman's Hour, @bbcnuala is joined by a panel of women who have firsthand experience behind bars, either as ex-prisoners or as those working with them, to discuss the realities. Listen from 10am ⬇️
