Highway of broken promises 🧵. For FM Specialists holding out hope for a new funding model to ensure their practices remain viable... govt again is releasing promises that "they remain committed"... Unfortunately I can no longer suggest that hope is imminent in Alberta .../1

Had the privilege of listening to Jane Philpott today. She said govts will claim they can't afford to fund primary care. But they must afford it. What we are providing now - presenting to emergency departments rather than focusing on prevention and health is the most expensive.

This is completely correct. The only way rural training of physicians works is with stable rural family practice units. Unless we stabilize these you can give away all the bursaries you want but nothing good will come of it. Government has been told this.

As a surgeon in Vancouver, I also maintain licenses in Alberta and Australia. I am amazed by how many doctors I meet here in BC who have exited Alberta in the last 2 years.

Calling Alberta govt/AH: I’m positive this is much more common than you think. Of course if you had a workforce plan for your 26B HC system you would already know…

I am a pathologist, and I have the same contract as these hematopathologists. I do exactly the same work I did 10 years ago, but I get paid 10-20% less. There is a reason they are leaving.

Also, did you know that when the expertise of a lab physician (pathologist, hematopathologist, microbiologist, etc) is needed in the evening, nighttime, or weekends. They get paid $0 to help you or come to the hospital.

Meanwhile in 🇨🇦, a fragmented (provincial) regulatory system is hamstringing patients. I know a UK family doctor who is fully licensed in Ontario yet cannot get licensure in BC. It’s time for federal medical regulation in Canada. It’s a global market for workers.

Hi from BC Danielle Smith - I keep an AB license but don’t practice in AB. Lots of docs in BC that I meet have left AB in the last two years and also keep an AB license. CPSA license # do not reflect the current healthcare dumpster fire that is sadly the status in AB.

Siloed provincial medical regulation in Canada makes tracking of physician suicide challenging compared to 🇬🇧 🇦🇺 . The absolute numbers may seem small by province, but pooled federally, there is a real problem. Condolences to the family, friends and workmates of this resident ☹️

Murray Sinclair was a great Canadian, a great Manitoban, a great Anishinaabe.  His career stands as a legacy of public service and a deep commitment to truth, fairness and dignity for all people.  He was the first Indigenous person to be named to the Manitoba provincial court

Tonight, I’m thinking about Justice Murray Sinclair and of the times that I was lucky enough to hear him speak about his work with the TRC. This moment stands out for me. It’s his answer when he was asked, “Why can’t you just get over it?”

Surgery resident texted me. I had to look up what “clutch” means. The learning is going both ways these days between Gen X and Z 😝.

In 2018 the CMA found that physicians in laboratory specialties were doing poorly with regards to mental health and burnout.⁦Canadian Medical Association⁩ ⁦Dr. Alika Lafontaine MD⁩ ⁦Dr. Joss Reimer⁩ Has there been any follow-up to this?
