National social insurance programs like Social Securty and EITC don't explicitly attempt to reduce geographic inequality, but they have that effect. UM Population Studies Center trainees Catalina Anampa Castro and Analidis Ochoa #ISRNextGeneration with Robert Manduca present 4/13 at #PAA2023.

University of Michigan has officially docked all pay but $100 for april from its grad workers, putting many of us in a position of dangerous financial precarity. friends/allies, please consider donating to Grad Employees' Org UMich strike fund at givebutter.com/GEOStrikeFund. we need all the help we can get ✊

Like any demographer, there's nothing that gets me going like an inappropriate denominator. We are NOT paid $35/hour for our labor, and the suggestion by UofM that we are is a slap in the face. We work really hard for this university, this is so disappointing and disheartening.

This is FIFTY years in the making. Every single unionization campaign at the U of Minnesota - 5 since 1974 - has lost. The closest we came in 2012 was 46% yes, 54% no. 97%. 97. Wow. Tears, joy & congrats, comrades, from an alum who fought & never thought they’d see this moment.

🚨New paper alert. Check out my new work in Demography Journal with the best (Wes Wislar)! Pop research shows sexual minorities have worse health than heterosexuals & same for gender minorities relative to cisgender people. What about people who are both sexual & gender minorities?

Not having this "12-month" funding in our labor contracts means that I am two months into summer without seeing any of that newly promised money from Rackham...

🗣️📑 new paper with amazing students Maya Glenn & Jacob Caponi about how and why the domestic violence victim was made into a crisis figure during the pandemic, theorizing spatial boundaries and gendered logics of separate spheres
