Word of the day: "palimpsest" - a surface bearing the traces of different layers of record; a paper, parchment, landscape or other material that has been inscribed & re-inscribed over time. From Greek παλίμψηστος, meaning 'scraped again'. (Whitley Fort, via Historic England)

This is what Bryn Celli Ddu looked like before W.J. Hemp started his excavations at the site in 1927. It was surrounded by a drystone wall, and had trees growing inside its small enclosure #BrynCelliDdu #YnysMôn #Anglesey CadwPublicProgrammes Cadw

Before W.J. Hemp's excavations at Bryn Celli Ddu, the trees & drystone wall were dismantled, & a new fence built. You can see tree trunks in the foreground. On the chamber capstone, some of the original cairn & mound material survived #BrynCelliDdu #YnysMôn #Anglesey

Bryn Celli Ddu Neolithic passage tomb as drawn by Captain François du Bois Lukis of Guernsey, in 1865, when the tomb was first excavated & was still referred to as 'Yr Ogof' or the hole or cave. The blueschist stone pillar seems to be toppling #BrynCelliDdu #YnysMôn #Anglesey

Bryn Celli Ddu, Bryn yr Hen Bobl & Barclodiad-y-Garwes as photographed by J.E Griffiths in 1900. I've picked the 3 Anglesey passage tombs, but there are more than 40 images from all over north-west Wales taken by him here: tiny.cc/0s99ry #YnysMôn #Anglesey #archaeology
