Sound on. There's lots of rare plants at the Garden, including this very rare Strelitzia reginae sonorous, the only plant in the world to emit sound. Air is forced through chambers in the flower to mimics bird mating calls. #gardens #plants #april #flowers #spring #glasshouses

Monotropa uniflora can't photosynthesise. Small scales wrap around their stalks where their leaves ought to be. They are mycoheterotrophs, drawing the energy and nutrients they require from nearby plants via shared mycorrhizal fungal networks. [1/2] šŸ“· Ā©Dennis Kalma

It’s pretty unusual for a scientist to remember a specific day that changed the course of their research. But here's an exception. Thanks to a new U.S. National Science Foundation grant, a team will explore colored nectars in 30 plant species, including this CBS Conservatory plant. z.umn.edu/colored-nectars

Seniors in my capstone grant writing clss are presenting final pitches with research objectives, expected outcomes, potential limitations, timelines for their chosen topics where they found a gap in the literature! And I remember them on the first day when it was just a mindmap!

The corpse flower opens when it’s warm, and its survival strategy is based on deception. It’s not a flower and it’s not a rotting dead animal, but it mimics both. A specimen SFConservatory is blooming now. Learn more in this KQED Science episode: kqed.org/science/191884…

Look at these tiny #Dioscoreaquaternata flowers from the Arnold Arboretum! Judging by all the shine and glisten at the base of the flowers in these pictures, it looks like the flowers have #nectar! 1/2

Caught a #Nesocodon flower with one #nectar droplet still potentially lagging behind in the pH transition from acidic (~6.5) to alkaline (~9) which then prevents the red color that comes with the formation of the #nesocodin pigment. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

#PlantsInside As much as I love all plants, I'm not a house plant person šŸ˜… this cutie was gifted recently, its called Dawidjieswortel, Cissampelos capensis. A plant medicine used as a blood purifier, to treat diabetes and used to expel retained placenta. #BlackBotanistsWeek2022
