That Shaw and Shrewsbury, famed Nottinghamshire CCC cricketers of the Golden Age, organised early cricket tours is well documented. Less well known is that they also managed the first Rugby tour to Australia by a British team in 1888 and set in motion the tradition of The British Lions


Charley Brown, born this day 1815, was a wicketkeeper-batsman for Nottinghamshire CCC whose most original claim to fame was to bowl right arm ābehind his backā, a curious method that helped to secure him nine First-Class wickets. trentbridge.co.uk/trentbridge/hiā¦

On 1 Feb 1998 England beat New Zealand to win the Under-19 World Cup. Paul Franks, now Notts CCC assistant head coach, made 16 and took 1-49; future Nottinghamshire CCC team-mates Graeme Swann and Richard Logan were also in the England team.



John Johnsonās portrait hangs over the door to the Long Room Notts Outlaws but not for his on-field exploits (just a few games) but as a long-served Hon Sec, club Vice-President and the guiding hand in the building of the groundās first Pavilion. #SportandArt.


Not many cricketers are remembered in stained glass but Rev Philip Williams, who played 20 First-Class games (two for Nottinghamshire CCC) in the 1840s, has this splendid memorial in his church St Mary the Virgin at Rewe, Devon. #SportandArt



Pastels by A Chevallier Tayler are widely collected. This image of AO āJonahā Jones is in the Heritage Store Nottinghamshire CCC. Jones led Notts to the Championship in 1907 and still holds the record ā at 296 ā for the highest score at Trent Bridge by a Notts batter. #SportandArtT


Mordecai Sherwin was the last professional captain of Nottinghamshire CCC in the 19th C, there was not another until 1961 when John Clay was appointed. This portrait of Sherwin, who also played in goal for Notts County, hangs in the Trent Bridge Long Room. #SportAndArt



On this day in 1934, Don Bradman captained the Australians for the first time. Here he leads his team out against Leicestershire Foxes š¦ at a packed Electricity Sports Cricket Club.







There is now a short report at the Association of Cricket Statisticians & Historians website acscricket.com on the highly successful Members' Meeting held at the Union Jack Club in London on Saturday. Those attending were entertained by seven speakers on a variety of cricketing topics.
