Chand Rajendra-Nicolucci (Chand Rajendra-Nicolucci) and I have a new paper in Social Media and Society on the evolution of content moderation as a profession. We look at the early history of content moderation and how we abandoned models of community governance. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20…

We argue that the crisis of legitimacy facing platforms has its roots in their adoption of a "customer service" model of online governance. We propose a return to models of governance that emphasize community participation, drawing on work from Jonathan Zittrain and Aviv Ovadya 🥦 among others
