This is the most important conference on the science of the carbon cycle, so if you have the opportunity to attend, it is well worth the investment. It only takes place once every 4 years, and the last one was canceled because Covid19, so a lot to catch up on the new science.

The oil industry is kicking off 2024 by spending millions to undermine global progress on the climate crisis. Far from being "part of the solution" as they claimed at COP28, they are aggressively working to prevent any transition away from fossil fuels. theguardian.com/us-news/2024/j…

Really exciting day with @cape_alliance and a whole community of school and education leaders trying to get climate into the heart of our education system. Thanks for inviting me!

Climate change and deforestation risk an Amazon tipping point Our new @nature paper led by Bernardo M Flores On current trends, we estimate that by 2050, 10 - 47% of Amazonian forests will exposed to compounding disturbances risking critical transitions nature.com/articles/s4158…

1/6 Always remember the tyranny of authoritarian language. That way powerful people change the way they describe the same concept, but with starkly juxtaposed language for different populations🧵

quite like this figure showing the massive increase in detail from climate models old ones though - much faster to run - still really useful

It is such an honour to accept an award from Royal Meteorological Society for my work communicating climate science! And pretty surreal to see my name listed alongside so many incredible scientists and educators. Massive thanks to my Carbon Brief colleagues for all your guidance and support!

Important new paper by Mark Williamson Exeter University Mathematics addressing the question: "Why does the emergent constraint on ECS from global temperature variability work for CMIP5 and not CMIP6?" @FemkeNijsse Global Systems Institute UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology esd.copernicus.org/articles/15/82…

Declining planetary albedo is contributing hugely to the acceleration of global warming, but why is the planet getting darker? This new PhD studentship, with Mark Williamson and me, sets out to answer that vital question. Please retweet. exeter.ac.uk/study/funding/…

Our ambitious experiment in the Amazon rainforest - ⁦AmazonFACE⁩ 6 rings of towers: 3 will keep CO2 levels within them high so we can study how rainforest trees respond. eg. does growth keep increasing at high CO2? Crucial knowledge for calculating future carbon budgets

1/7 The GlobalCarbonProject has published its four Global Methane Budget as an ERL paper and pre-print in ESSD; links at the end of thread. Humans are now responsible for two-thirds or more of all global CH4 emissions It covers the period 2000-2020, with some extensions up to 2023
