As I watched another speaker camera freeze last week during a big virtual event it reminded me of the importance of turning background blur off to ensure maximum resources on your computer are available for getting your face out to the world.

If your in-person event looks like a boring work meeting, don't expect rave fans. If your virtual event looks like a zoom call, don't expect wild engagement.

When you present in person, people can chose whether to focus on you or your slides. In virtual they can’t. If your slides are showing, your face is tiny. They didn’t come for your slides, they came for you. So focus on delivering your message without slides for a bigger impact

When presenting in virtual it’s super tempting to read from a full script. It reduce nerves but it reduces the impact of what you say way more. You can’t see your eyes scanning the screen but your audience can. You’re telegraphing: “I shouldn’t be here”.

Presenting solo in a virtual meeting is a very lonely affair - with no cues from the audience, after about 8-9 mins you can hear and see a speaker dry up. Put the same person in a dialogue and they can keep going for much longer.

Excellent thread from Julius Solaris explaining Zoom’s recent move away from virtual/ hybrid events. The events industry is still looking for the right way to engage virtual audiences so meanwhile organisers turn to in-person when logic suggests virtual/ hybrid is the way to go

When you are presenting in virtual, you have limited time to get your message across - typically 9 minutes or less. Take longer and your audience will drift to other tasks - and come back to the show when you have finished.

Great trends summary from Skift Meetings. Some have existed more in theory than reality before (Data-Driven Event Personalization) while others, like “Weaponisation of Travel” sound new.

Hi ThreeUKSupport I have apparently consumed all my 12gb of data even though I have set everything to low data mode and had phone on flight mode for most of my trip. Is it possible you are sending me inaccurate text messages or do I have another issue?

I love the fact that Sarina Wiegman can be the greatest football coach on earth while still wearing her mum's old ski anorak: bbc.co.uk/sport/football…
