German chancellor Friedrich Merz pulled off a successful visit to the White House, effectively winning by not losing. But there were no real concrete takeaways and despite the good vibes, it showed how limited German hard and soft power is.  @UnHerd unherd.com/newsroom/merzs…

June 12 is freedom day in Germany. Freiheitsfonds buys people out of jail for not being able to afford bus and train tickets. It's a crime of poverty. They're locked up because of Nazi-era legislation and "liberated" postwar Germany hasn't changed it in 80 years.
