One last reminder before Liberation Day: "Are tariffs bad for growth? Yes, say five decades of data from 150 countries" pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC72…

With apologies, a long tweet, about the likely macroeconomic outcomes of Liberation Day. Tariffs can be imposed for understandable if not necessarily good reasons: Protect a sector, right or wrong. Extract rents from foreign producers if there are rents to be extracted. Sure,

the idea you're going to reshore this type of manufacturing is laughable. wheat timbs would cost $500 if made here. basic vans would be $200. a north face jacket would be $750. americans are not paying that kind of money for clothes and shoes.

People fundamentally do not understand how much the US benefits from low wages across the world. Manufacturing jobs in many countries we import from are $1/hour. ONE DOLLAR. They are an order of magnitude lower than our lowest state minimum wage.

This chart was made in America by skilled artisans. It also provides important context for understanding our current tariff situation.

It's rare to have economists agree so much on anything: 0% disagree that "reductions in Western programs of development assistance will have substantially negative effects on the most vulnerable people in the recipient countries over the next five years"

I signed the 10% Giving Pledge this year, and this week, I decided to donate 19% of my annual income to global health charities. It's not going to be anywhere near "enough", but I'm happy to do it — scientificdiscovery.dev/p/we-dont-have…

This is flying a bit under the radar. But in terms of damage to America’s innovation and knowledge supremacy, the chilling effect of these revocations on the country’s ability to attract and retain scientific talent likely dwarfs the impact of tariffs or other policies.

If you have an income of over 900$ per month, you are in the global top 15% (and yes, this is already adjusted for differences in prices)

Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools) Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants

Fixed it: --> last year, the U.S. sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal **combined** --> every $1 of research funded by NIH generates $2.56 in economic activity --> more than 1.1M foreign students come to the U.S. each year

Excellent highlight of PRO (proimpact.tools), an innovative and essential initiative moving philanthropic dollars to urgent global projects most in need after USAID funding cuts npr.org/sections/goats…

. Center for Global Development we have produced a lot of analysis showing the impact of USAID cuts. In a new initiative a team is identifying some of the most cost-effective exUSAID programs that can still be rescued and match them with donors willing to fund them. npr.org/sections/goats…
