What they usually call ‘some personal news’: I wrote a book all about Sofia Coppola. It will be published by Quercus / Greenfinch and on your bookshelves this November :) waterstones.com/book/sofia-cop…

not hating on sofia, i like her. but c'mon alice guy-blaché, maya deren, ida lupino, barbara loden, agnès varda, mira nair, gillian armstrong, jane campion, dorothy arzner...there were so many women filmmakers whose lasting work and influence can still be seen and felt today

Before The Boss Baby, movies were about grown-ups. If it wasn’t about grown-ups it was about teenagers, and if it wasn’t about teenagers it was about babies in non-managerial roles. Few movies were made about boss babies.

How do I put this? I really like Sofia Coppola and her work. You should check out this whole book I wrote about her without once suggesting she is the beginning of women’s cinema 🥲

I’ve been telling everyone all Cannes that I *always* miss seeing whatever wins the Palme. If it’s the new Joachim Trier, which screened after I left and is the first thing to get pretty much consensus rave reviews……that would square perfectly. 🙃

For Men's Health Mag, I wrote about the health of men, which is currently poor. Talking FRIENDSHIP, the male loneliness crisis, reading the room, the defiant politics of just hanging out, and Bowling Alone with filmmaker Andy DeYoung: menshealth.com/entertainment/…

This is a strong belief I *can* back up. Just try to be sad while a five year old is asking you to explain what a bobsled is or whether T-rexes were alive in the Cretaceous period. Impossible

This is one of the best movies and to see the raw and beautiful chemistry between Hackman and Pacino, oh man it’s just magic while watching it. It’s really just an incredible movie. So alive and real is their friendship.

For Paul Newman’s centenary at BFI Film on Film this June, I’ll be doing an introduction of Martin Ritt’s mean-spirited 1963 neo-Western Hud. In 35mm, of course. Couldn’t be happier. whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default….

devaluing the arts has made a lot of people stupider in ways we’re currently reckoning with right now. and it’s only going to get worse!
