Wow, @nature has retracted the 2020 Poore et al. cancer microbiome paper that we showed (journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…) was deeply flawed. The retraction date is tomorrow so I can't yet read the official notice, but I'll update when I can Retraction Watch Professor Booty PhD

I knew nothing about fungi when I started this collaboration. Special thanks to Bing Zhai and Tobias Hohl is now @fungalspore.bsky.social for the opportunity. Bing Zhai has been a great collaborator and taught me so much. This work changed my career, laying the foundation for my K99 and future lab Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

For good science, one person in the collaboration should have their feet on the ground (be an expert in the field) and the other person should have their head in the clouds (full of ideas from other fields).

I trained a LLM for single cell RNAseq generation recently. Terabytes of data. Megawatts of GPU usage. Lights in houses dimmed all throughout silicon valley. In the end, it learned to predict cell type. As in, the predictions were only slightly better than the mean expression!

The PhD application deadline for the Quantitative Biomedical Sciences program at Dartmouth (geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/qbs/) is this coming Sunday (Dec 1). If you like bioinformatics, including translational or data structure research, QBS is a great addition to your application list.

1) Since there is a lot of confusion about the reduction of the overhead rate on NIH grants to 15% (see here: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/n…) I'll do a little tweetorial (or X-torial?) about it.
