❓Did You Know❓ When the Belfast Poor House opened in 1774, children were not intended to enter its doors as the building was planned to help ‘aged and infirm persons’. Keep an eye on our socials next week when we meet the woman & child who changed the Charitable Society’s mind

Last week, we mentioned that when the Poor House first opened children were not initially intended to be residents. However, that changed in Nov 1775 when Ann Curran courageously requested permission to stay with her young daughter.

Due to her remarkable good conduct, diligence, and helpfulness, the Committee approved her request, allowing her to share a room and keep her child close. Her act of bravery underscored the urgent need to support orphaned, abandoned & impoverished children.

#OnThisDay 1770 Mary Ann McCracken was born. She was an abolitionist, social reformer & activist who fought for the rights of women & championed Belfast’s poor throughout a long life that encompassed the most turbulent years of Irish history.
