Melissa Hortman, the Minnesota lawmaker assassinated last night, was Speaker of the MN House in 2023-2024, when her party part ran the state government. So she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period. Brief 🧵 on that legacy:

It's funny they have to make opposing Zohran about competence. They're worried the Bronx Science/Bowdoin son of an academic won't appoint people with appropriate subject matter expertise to his administration? Really?

A big difference between now and right before we invaded Iraq is that almost no one in America wants or thinks we need to go to war with Iran and the people who do are barely even trying to justify it because they don't have to.

The leader of the Democratic Party in Minnesota was assassinated by a cop in her home, one of New York's 3 citywide elected officials was kidnapped on camera by gestapo, and Trump is credibly threatening to nuke Iran. That catch you up on the last 3 days of news?

Night of the Hunter (1955) tonight. Many of the most beautiful (& emotional) shots are director Laughton referencing the silent movies that enchanted him as a kid. Like Tarantino referencing the '70s, right down to casting an actor from those formative years in a major role.

Noncompetes trap thousands of NYC workers, from coffee baristas and ER doctors to engineers and plumbers. One veterinarian told us that noncompetes had even resulted in the death of people’s pets. Grateful that Zohran Kwame Mamdani’s plan includes banning noncompetes across NYC.

There is an argument to be made, at the scale it was run and the votes that were pulled, this is the single biggest victory by a left-wing candidate in American history. This is NYC. Zohran needs to win a general election, but boy does he have momentum entering it.

Brad Lander speaks: "Andrew Cuomo is in the past. He is not the present or future of New York City. Good fucking riddance"

I don’t see a lot of people connecting this dot but the election is a victory for the Columbia student protesters, who were taught and supported by Zohran’s professor dad

"Regardless of how you feel about the politics" - everyone is just going to paper over the fact that his videos were about lowering rent, free transportation, childcare and taxing the rich. He didn't win because of his fucking color grading!

I keep saying this too. American media are going to try co-opting Zohran as an individual success story, bc that’s the type of narrative we’re used to. But it’s wrong, bc he is the standard-bearer of a political movement that provided him volunteers and informed his positions

I think there are at least many hundreds of millennials with Zohran's public speaking skills. Some of them are already members of Congress! It's the combination with coherent, serious politics that's uncommon.
