Never gloat in someone else's misfortune or troubles. Never act like a condescending prick. Or you will suffer for it. Remind yourself, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." Know that it might just as easily have been you.

Always be honest with yourself. Too many people have ruined their lives trying to sustain a lie that doesn't even serve them.

There is always something to smile about.

After you've had enough experiences, you realize two fundamental conflicting truths about people: 1) Most people have the exact same hopes and fears. We are more alike than different. 2) Each person is so unique that you can miss out on a lot by assuming everyone is the same.
