Happy for Dr. Nikki Traylor-Knowles @cnidimmunitylab, who is spending time in NE Brazil! I taught English Cultura Inglesa in nearby #Recife (named for its reefs! 🪸) for a gap year when I was 18! Saudades do Brasil! 🇧🇷

Happy #MothersDay to my mum Robbie who’s not on Twitter and often gets her Mother’s Day wishes late (because it’s celebrated two months earlier in the UK… 😬) ❤️❤️ Love you mum!

Hot off the press! 🚨 Our new Wiley Ecology & Evolution pub suggests that #coral-ophiuroid associations can shift from commensalism to parasitism & brittle stars may consume coral gametes to boost their reproductive & metabolic function! Every day, I am inspired by the innovative efforts to help the world’s precious coral reefs become resilient enough to survive the coming decades. There are a million reasons why we need to do this but here’s just one of mine. 🪸 #WorldReefDay

Follow-up report from Thursday, when Derek Van Dam came out with us to survey reefs near University of Miami Rosenstiel School. Reefs near us are perched on the edge of severe #coralbleaching in the next week or two, potentially crashing this year’s #coralspawning … Coral Reef Futures Lab @livwilliamson

One of my favorite wild elkhorn #corals in Key Largo, a parent of our babies for years, has succumbed to the 2023 #bleaching event. While some corals died quickly from July's extreme temps, others have declined over time without relief from the heat. 🔥 The tragedy continues. 😭

Thanks Ira Flatow and Science Friday for the opportunity to talk about efforts to increase the heat tolerance of corals (and how to stay motivated even during times of crisis…)

First paper from DaisyBuzzoni’s Master’s thesis in Coral Reef Futures Lab lab now out… nice demonstration of priority effects and very relevant to understanding potential recovery of these species in Florida and elsewhere following #coral #bleaching during #marineheatwave of 2023…

2023 showed us that heat tolerance is the most important trait for #coral survival in warming oceans, as we tragically lost most of Florida’s remaining ACER due to record hot waters. We must accelerate efforts to understand and boost heat tolerance in natural and restored corals!

Humbled to be included among such a diverse group of global leaders. This is a reflection of all the hard work done by the Coral Reef Futures Lab and X-Reefs teams. Thank you Business Insider for highlighting the need for #ClimateAction ! 🌎🌡️🪸 Full article: businessinsider.com/climate-action…

Exciting summer ahead as we try to breed these corals and understand their resilience to the unusual conditions in Tela Bay! Shout out to Antal Borcsok and lab members Alexandra Wen Fabrizio Lepiz Conejo and Cailyn Joseph for all the hard work! (and Teia Baker for hand delivery of CITES permits!)
