Just learned that "bistro" comes from the Russian bystro which means quick. Term was probably adopted by the French after the battle of Paris in 1814 when Russians, and many others, showed up, sending Napoleon into exile.

Have you read Anatomy of A Murder? One of the top 20 books from the American genre. Written by a superior court judge - 450 pages of pure pleasure. Highest recommendation.

My interview with Nigella - why she likes brown food, on finding happiness in a universe that is random and cruel and why George Orwell's 11 steps to making tea drives her nuts. x.com/177MilkStreet/…

Dogs have a sense of smell that is, perhaps, 100,000 times better than ours. From Aesop’s Animals; (…a sniffer dog can pick up the trail of a person that passed through the area two or three days previously). Great book / well worth the read.

Interviewed Barry Leveson, author of Habeas Codfish, about food and the law. Did you know that you can sue for "loss of enjoyment?" Two kids ate bad applesauce and their parents sued the producer for "loss of enjoyment" due to trauma. (They lost.)

Interviewed Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame and he explained that Jack could have been saved in that iconic Titanic scene if the two of them had just put their life preservers UNDER the door.

Interviewing Dwight Garner (The Upstairs Delicatessen) this afternoon - here is one of his fave quotes - Samuel Johnson wrote, ‘A cucumber should be well sliced, and dressed with pepper and vinegar,’ he said, ‘and then thrown out, as good for nothing.’”

When was the last time you read The Yearling? Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1939 - Rawlings lived in rural FL for years and the detail is amazing. Definitely NOT a Disney movie. Highest reco. (Fave line from movie about the bear, “Is he a comin’ or is he a goin’?” Classic.

Interviewing spear-fisher Valentine Thomas today for Milk Street Radio. She swims with sharks, "My daydream is short-lived as I suddenly realize I am not alone. A ten-foot tiger shark is gliding towards me."

Did you know that just 5.6% of an American's daily salt intake comes from home cooked foods? Just another reason to love home cooking! (Over 70% comes from foods from restaurants, supermarkets, and take-out.)
