Pretty happy with the rye catch after corn I think there is going to be enough to make it worth while to pasture the heifers in it.

Congratulations to my colleague Doug Young who was presented with the Dr. Ron Pitblado teaching award at yesterday's Ridgetown Campus convocation. Well deserved Doug! And oh yeah, happy retirement! #ontag

Having fun today trying a few new things. Thanks oats, peas, Italian ryegrass, and forage turnip. Interested in how this turns out!

Good morning, Gordon Alblas here taking over the twitter for the week. Taking a little time to figure this out while waiting for a deer to walk by my stand lol. We run a 60 cow dairy with a small sheep flock and grow a bit of cash crops outside of st George Ontario

Gordon Alblas here again today, roots not iron has become one of my mottos when it comes to soil management. Living roots from cover crops will penetrate hard compacted soils plus help carry wheel traffic. + roots grow when field conditions are not good enough for tillage.

Not common to see the black and whites on pasture but we have found it to be a great way to feed the non producing cattle. Helps manage the cover crop and feeds the animals at the same time. Totally worth the time and pain of fencing.

Gordon Alblas one thing for have learned is don’t worry what the neighbours think try something new! When something fails it’s really not a fail it is a learning opportunity and time to figure out why it failed! There is so much soil improvement potential out there to be gained!

Gordon Alblas I have been trying a few new things ( enough that my Dad asked me the other day when I was going to have a normal season to have something to compare to lol). This year I seeded some ryegrass for next spring and added forage turnip to oats and peas

Gordon Alblas here once again, roots are one of the most Important things to soil health. Diversity of root types and keeping roots in the soil year round! New roots will be able to use the same path left behind from the last plant. This has made a big difference on our farm!

Along with roots worms help improve soil health. They are free tillage so to speak. I have been amazed at what the difference they make between fields with low vs high population. They are worth the effort to feed them. Think of them as livestock

I sure like farming with the goal of having every acre green over winter. It sure cheers up a dreary January day to see all the green!
